Umbrella Company vs Limited Company for Salesforce Contractors in the UK (2026)

Umbrella company vs limited company contractor in 2026: real take home pay at UK Salesforce day rates, the April 2026 PAYE rules and the rate to ask for.

Umbrella Company vs Limited Company for Salesforce Contractors in the UK (2026)

Umbrella company vs limited company contractor is the first financial decision you make when you take a Salesforce contract in the UK, and in 2026 it is no longer the decision it was five years ago. At a 550 pound day rate, a limited company outside IR35 leaves you about 3,900 pounds a year better off than an umbrella, not the 10,000 pounds that contractor folklore still quotes. The dividend tax rise of 6 April 2026 and the 26.5 percent marginal corporation tax band have quietly eaten most of the old advantage.

This guide runs the arithmetic at the day rates Salesforce contractors are actually offered, explains what the new umbrella PAYE rules changed on 6 April 2026, and gives you the rate uplift to ask for when a role is inside IR35.

What changed for umbrella companies on 6 April 2026

From 6 April 2026, responsibility for operating PAYE on the pay of workers employed by an umbrella company moved up the supply chain. HMRC states that the rules now apply to the agency that has the direct contract with the end client to supply the worker, and where there is no agency in the chain, to the end client itself. See the official measure on GOV.UK, PAYE changes for the umbrella company market.

The reform did not ban umbrella companies and it did not change your own tax. It changed who HMRC chases when the tax is wrong. The practical consequence for a Salesforce contractor is visible in two places. Agencies have cut their preferred supplier lists hard, because every umbrella on the list is now a liability they carry jointly. And the schemes that advertised 85 percent or 90 percent take home have largely disappeared from those lists, which removes a trap that caught a fair number of contractors between 2021 and 2025.

If an agency now insists you use one of two or three named umbrellas, that is the new rules working as intended, not the agency being difficult. You can still negotiate the margin, and you can still ask for the assignment rate rather than the quoted gross.

Where the money actually goes under an umbrella

The single most common mistake is reading the assignment rate as your salary. It is not. GOV.UK guidance on working through an umbrella company is explicit that the umbrella deducts its operating costs, employer National Insurance, the Apprenticeship Levy and holiday pay from the rate the agency pays, and that your gross pay is what is left after those deductions.

At 2026/27 rates that stack is predictable: employer National Insurance at 15 percent on pay above the 5,000 pound secondary threshold, the Apprenticeship Levy at 0.5 percent, and an umbrella margin that runs roughly 20 to 30 pounds a week. Here is the full picture on a 550 pound a day Salesforce contract billed over 220 days.

Umbrella vs limited company take home at real Salesforce rates

Rates first, because the comparison only means something against the market. IT Jobs Watch puts the median UK Salesforce contract rate at 525 pounds a day across 1,163 contract vacancies in the six months to 27 October 2026, up 5 percent year on year. The narrower Salesforce Consultant title sits at 450 pounds across a much thinner sample of 28 adverts. Our own grid in the UK Salesforce contractor day rates breakdown splits that by role and by IR35 status.

The limited company column below assumes an outside IR35 determination, a 12,570 pound director salary, 2,500 pounds of genuine business costs, corporation tax at the 26.5 percent marginal rate that applies between 50,000 and 250,000 pounds of profit (see GOV.UK corporation tax rates), and the rest taken as dividends at the new 10.75 and 35.75 percent rates.

700 pounds154,000 pounds82,247 pounds85,570 pounds3,323 pounds55.6 percent

Three things stand out. The limited company advantage is worth roughly 3 to 4 percent of billing, not the double digit figure most contractors still assume. It shrinks at the top of the table, because once dividends push total income past 100,000 pounds the personal allowance taper claws back 60 pence in every pound. And at 450 pounds a day the 3,512 pound gain is largely spent before it reaches you if your accountant charges 1,500 pounds a year and you carry insurance on top.

Why the gap closed in 2026

Two changes did the damage. Dividend tax rates rose by two percentage points on 6 April 2026, from 8.75 to 10.75 percent at basic rate and from 33.75 to 35.75 percent at higher rate, with the dividend allowance still frozen at 500 pounds. And corporation tax marginal relief means a Salesforce contractor billing between roughly 65,000 and 265,000 pounds pays an effective 26.5 percent on profit above 50,000 pounds, not 19 percent.

Stack those on top of employer National Insurance at 15 percent, which the umbrella passes through but which a limited company largely avoids by paying a low salary, and the two routes converge. The limited company still wins outside IR35. It just no longer wins by enough to justify the structure on tax alone.

Inside IR35: the limited company stops helping

This is the part that still catches experienced people. If the end client determines the assignment is inside IR35, routing it through your own limited company does not give you dividends. The fee payer deducts PAYE and National Insurance before the money reaches your company, you draw it as a deemed payment, and you end up within a few hundred pounds of the umbrella outcome while still filing accounts, running payroll and paying an accountant.

Keep the company open if you have outside IR35 work running alongside, or expect it within the year. Otherwise an umbrella is the cheaper and quieter answer for an inside assignment. The structure has to follow the determination, never the other way round.

The rate conversion to run before you accept

The useful question is not which structure is better. It is what an inside IR35 role has to pay to match an outside one. Run the numbers above in reverse: 550 pounds a day outside IR35 through a limited company nets 74,125 pounds. To reach the same net through an umbrella you need roughly 605 pounds a day, an uplift of about 10 percent.

Rule of thumb for UK Salesforce contracts in 2026: ask for about 10 percent more on an inside IR35 assignment to stand still, and closer to 12 percent if the role also removes expenses you were claiming through your company. Anything less and you are taking a pay cut while calling it a lateral move.

That conversion matters because inside IR35 is now the default for most permanent client sites in UK Salesforce delivery, while outside determinations cluster around short, scoped programme work for integrators. If you are weighing the UK against other markets, the European freelance Salesforce rates guide shows what the same seniority earns in countries that have no equivalent of IR35.

When each route is the right call

Pick an umbrella when:

  • The assignment is inside IR35 and you have no outside work alongside it.
  • It is your first contract and you want statutory sick pay, holiday pay and parental rights from day one.
  • The contract is under six months and the cost of incorporating will not be recovered.
  • The agency's preferred supplier list leaves you no realistic alternative, which is more common since April 2026.

Set up a limited company when:

  • You hold a written outside IR35 status determination statement, and you have read it.
  • You expect at least twelve months of contracting, ideally across more than one client.
  • Your day rate is above roughly 450 pounds, below which the gain is eaten by accountancy and insurance.
  • You want employer pension contributions out of company profit, which is the single largest remaining lever at high rates and is worth more than the dividend arbitrage.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my limited company for an inside IR35 Salesforce contract?

Yes, it is legal, but it gains you almost nothing. The fee payer deducts income tax and National Insurance before paying your company, so the money arrives already taxed and you draw it as a deemed payment. You keep the compliance burden without the dividend treatment. Most contractors in that position either switch to an umbrella for the assignment or keep the company dormant.

How much does an umbrella company charge a Salesforce contractor?

The margin is typically 20 to 30 pounds per week worked, so 1,000 to 1,500 pounds a year on a full calendar. Treat anything advertised as a percentage of your rate with suspicion, and ignore take home percentages entirely: they vary with how the quote treats employer National Insurance, which is the largest deduction by far at 14,906 pounds on a 550 pound day rate.

Did the April 2026 rules ban umbrella companies?

No. Umbrella companies still employ workers and still run payroll. What changed on 6 April 2026 is that the agency with the direct contract to the end client, or the end client where no agency exists, is now accountable for the PAYE and can be pursued by HMRC if the umbrella gets it wrong.

Is the 2026 dividend tax rise enough to make umbrella the better option?

Not on its own. Outside IR35, a limited company is still ahead by roughly 3,300 to 3,900 pounds a year at Salesforce day rates between 450 and 700 pounds. The rise narrowed the gap rather than closing it. The question is whether that margin justifies the admin for your situation, and under 450 pounds a day it often does not.

Can I switch from an umbrella to a limited company mid contract?

Only if the IR35 determination allows it, and only with the agency's agreement, since the contract is between the agency and the umbrella. In practice a switch happens at renewal. If the status determination says inside, a switch gains you nothing regardless of what the agency agrees to.

Methodology. Umbrella figures assume 220 billable days, a 25 pound weekly margin, employer National Insurance at 15 percent above the 5,000 pound secondary threshold and the Apprenticeship Levy at 0.5 percent. Limited company figures assume an outside IR35 determination, a 12,570 pound director salary, 2,500 pounds of business costs, corporation tax marginal relief at 26.5 percent and the remainder as dividends at the 2026/27 rates of 10.75 and 35.75 percent above a 500 pound allowance. Day rate benchmarks read on 27 October 2026 from IT Jobs Watch. These are worked examples, not tax advice: student loans, pension contributions and the Scottish rates all move the result.
