Which Salesforce Certification Should You Get First in 2026? A Recruiter's Answer
Which Salesforce certification should I get first in 2026? A recruiter's answer by starting profile, with exam costs, pass marks and UK advert data.
If you are asking which Salesforce certification should I get first, the honest answer in 2026 is the Platform Administrator for roughly four candidates in five. It costs 200 dollars, it is 60 questions in 105 minutes, and it is the only credential European employers treat as a baseline rather than a bonus. But the answer flips for three specific starting profiles, and picking the wrong first exam costs two or three months you cannot get back. Here is the grid we use when a candidate asks us, built on what job adverts actually requested in the six months to 24 October 2026 and on the official exam outlines, not on the Trailhead catalogue.
Where these figures come from. Advert volumes, medians and year on year moves are the six months to 24 October 2026 from IT Jobs Watch: all adverts citing Salesforce (1,682 permanent adverts), Salesforce Administrator, Salesforce Developer, Salesforce Consultant and Salesforce Business Analyst. Exam mechanics come from the official Salesforce exam guides for the Platform Administrator and the Platform App Builder, and from the Salesforce exam retake policy. Price tiers are from Apex Hours on exam pricing and registration. Prep times and screening behaviour are observations from Apiire's European desk, not published statistics.
The short answer, and the three exceptions
Start with the Platform Administrator, called the Salesforce Certified Administrator until the 2025 renaming. It is the credential that appears most often as a hard requirement in European adverts, it has no prerequisite, and it maps onto the job that hires the most juniors. Three starting profiles should do something else first.
- You already code professionally in another stack. Java, C#, TypeScript or PHP developers should sit the Platform Developer instead. Going through the admin exam first is not wasted, but it delays your first interview by two months for a credential that recruiters will not weigh heavily on a developer CV.
- You are not sure the ecosystem is for you. Spend 75 dollars on the Salesforce Associate before you spend 200. It is the cheapest honest test of whether the platform interests you, and it is designed for 0 to 6 months of exposure.
- You already administer an org at work. If you have 6 to 18 months of real org time and the admin exam would be a formality, the Platform App Builder says more about you, because it is the one that proves you can build rather than maintain.
What the advert data says about your four possible entry doors
Certifications are a means to a job title, so start from the titles that are actually hiring. The table below is the United Kingdom, where advert data is densest and the European pattern shows up earliest.
| Job title | Permanent adverts, 6 months | Salaries quoted | Median advertised | Year on year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All adverts citing Salesforce | 1,682 | not stated | £60,000 | +11.1% |
| Salesforce Administrator | 93 | 59 | £40,000 | -11.1% |
| Salesforce Developer | 216 | 148 | £65,000 | +8.3% |
| Salesforce Consultant | 28 | 28 | £95,000 | +35.7% |
| Salesforce Business Analyst | 20 | 7 | £77,500 | +55.0% |
Read it carefully, because the headline numbers mislead. Administrator adverts nearly doubled, from 47 to 93, while the median fell from 45,000 to 40,000 pounds: more doors, lower pay per door, which is exactly what a market absorbing a wave of newly certified admins looks like. Developer adverts went from 78 to 216 with the median still rising, which is the healthier signal. And the consultant and business analyst medians sit on 28 and 7 quoted salaries respectively, so treat them as directional only. Neither is an entry point anyway. We covered the wider picture in our analysis of the weight recruiters actually give certifications.
Which Salesforce certification should I get first, by starting profile
The right first exam depends on what you bring, not on what the catalogue suggests. Prep times below assume 8 to 12 hours a week, which is what most people in a job can sustain.
| Your starting point | First certification | Fee | Realistic prep | Why this one |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Career change from sales, support or operations | Platform Administrator | $200 | 8 to 12 weeks | The only entry credential named as a requirement in volume. Your process knowledge is the differentiator. |
| Total beginner, testing the water | Salesforce Associate | $75 | 2 to 4 weeks | Cheap, built for 0 to 6 months of exposure, and it tells you whether to commit the 200 dollars. |
| Developer in another stack | Platform Developer | $200 | 6 to 10 weeks | Apex and Lightning Web Components are close enough to what you know. Skip the admin detour. |
| Business analyst or product owner | Platform Administrator, then Business Analyst | $200 then $200 | 10 to 14 weeks | The admin exam gives you the platform vocabulary the BA exam assumes you already have. |
| Admin in post, 6 to 18 months in an org | Platform App Builder | $200 | 6 to 8 weeks | Proves build capability rather than maintenance, and it is the usual step before consultant tracks. |
| Consultant already billing on Salesforce | Sales Cloud or Service Cloud Consultant | $200 | 6 to 8 weeks | Matches the cloud you deliver on. Picking the cloud you do not sell is the classic waste. |
If you are coming from outside technology entirely, the realistic sequence and timeline are set out in our honest guide to a career change into Salesforce at 30 or 40, and the longer arc is mapped in the career path from admin to architect.
Platform Administrator or Platform App Builder first?
This is the question we get most often, and the official exam guides settle it better than any opinion. Same length, same price, very different difficulty and very different signal.
| Exam | Questions | Time | Pass mark | Fee and retake | Recommended experience |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platform Administrator | 60 plus up to 5 unscored | 105 minutes | 68% in English | $200, then $100 | 6 months or more as an administrator |
| Platform App Builder | 60 plus up to 5 unscored | 105 minutes | 73% | $200, then $100 | 6 months to 1 year building apps |
The five point pass mark gap matters less than the shape of each outline. The App Builder is 32 percent business logic and process automation plus 20 percent data modelling, so more than half the exam rewards someone who has genuinely built flows and objects. The Administrator spreads across eight domains, with Data and Analytics Management at 17 percent, Configuration and Setup, Object Manager and Automation at 15 percent each. If you have never configured a real org, the App Builder is the harder of the two despite looking narrower.
Agentforce is now 8 percent of the Platform Administrator exam outline, which is more than Sales and Marketing Applications or Service and Support Applications individually. Artificial intelligence also appears in 18.1 percent of all United Kingdom adverts citing Salesforce, 305 of 1,682. Treat the agent section as the part of the exam that is actually worth something in an interview, not as a box to skim.
The 2026 trap: do not pay for a certification that is retiring
Salesforce renamed 35 certifications in 2025 and announced the retirement of 24 more in 2026. Registration for those closed on 24 July 2026, the last sitting was 31 August 2026, and they retire formally on 1 February 2027. If you hold one it stays valid and visible on your Trailblazer profile, simply labelled retired. The practical consequence for a first certification is narrower than it sounds but still real: much of the study material and many of the course offers still circulating online target credentials on that list, mostly niche cloud and Accredited Professional ones. Before you buy a course, check the credential you are paying for still exists in the current catalogue, and prefer the core role exams, which are untouched.
What we actually check when a certified CV lands
Three or four certifications on a profile with no delivered work is the single most common pattern we decline. Here is the order in which a recruiter reads your evidence.
- One credential that matches the job title. Admin role, admin certification. Anything beyond that is noise at screening stage.
- What you built, in two lines. Number of users, objects touched, the automation you replaced. This beats a second certification every time.
- Whether the certification is maintained. Lapsed maintenance modules on a Trailblazer profile read as abandonment, and they are free to keep current.
- Everything else. Superbadges, Trailhead ranks and certification counts move a decision at the margin, never at the start.
The retake maths nobody mentions
Salesforce allows three attempts at the same exam per release cycle: 24 hours of waiting after a first failure, 14 days after a second, then you wait for the next release. Retakes cost half the original fee. So the realistic worst case on a first admin certification is 200 dollars plus two retakes at 100, which is 400 dollars, and a two to three week delay rather than a dead end. Budget 400 and sit the exam sooner. Candidates who wait until they feel certain typically lose more to delay than they would ever have lost on a retake.
Mistakes that cost candidates months
- Stacking certifications instead of finding an org to work in. Four credentials and zero delivered projects is a weaker application than one credential and a volunteer org for a charity.
- Choosing a cloud specialism before the first job. Marketing Cloud, CPQ and Field Service pay well and hire narrowly. Specialise once someone is paying you.
- Buying a voucher months early. Vouchers are valid 12 months, non transferable and non refundable, so buy when you book.
Frequently asked questions
Which Salesforce certification should I get first?
The Platform Administrator, formerly the Salesforce Certified Administrator, unless you already code professionally in another language, in which case sit the Platform Developer, or you already administer an org, in which case sit the Platform App Builder. It costs 200 dollars, there is no prerequisite, and Salesforce recommends six months or more of administrator experience, which in practice means a free developer org and a real project.
Can I get a Salesforce job with only one certification?
Yes, and most of the juniors we place have exactly one. What decides the outcome is the project you can describe, not the number of credentials. Administrator adverts in the United Kingdom nearly doubled year on year while the median advertised salary fell 11 percent, so the first job is available but competitive, and evidence of delivered work is what separates two certified candidates.
Is the Salesforce Associate certification worth 75 dollars?
As a decision tool, yes. As a hiring signal, no. It is designed for people with 0 to 6 months of exposure and no employer we work with treats it as a qualification. Sit it if you want a cheap, structured reason to commit or walk away, then move straight to the Platform Administrator.
Should I get the Agentforce Specialist certification first?
No. It assumes platform fundamentals you do not have yet, and employers hiring for Agentforce want evidence of shipped agent work far more than the credential. Learn the admin platform first, then add it: our verdict on the Agentforce Specialist certification goes through the numbers.
How long does the first certification take?
Eight to twelve weeks at 8 to 12 hours a week for the Platform Administrator if you are starting from nothing, two to four weeks for the Associate, six to ten weeks for the Platform Developer if you already code. The people who take six months are usually studying without a practice org, which is the slowest possible route. A current list of what the market asks for is in our guide to the Salesforce certifications that matter in 2026.
Apiire places Salesforce profiles across Europe and sees which certifications open doors and which ones sit unread on a CV. If you are about to book your first exam and want a second opinion on the choice, our page for candidates is the place to start.
