How Much Should You Charge as a Salesforce Freelancer? A Pricing Method for 2026
How much should I charge as a Salesforce freelancer? The 2026 method: UK median 525 pounds a day, your real billable days, and the costs to load in.
How much should I charge as a Salesforce freelancer is a question with two answers, and most people only look for one. The market gives you the ceiling: the median day rate quoted in UK contract adverts citing Salesforce is 525 pounds for the six months to 3 November 2026, up 5 percent year on year, with the 25th percentile at 425 pounds and the 90th at 725 pounds. Your own numbers give you the floor, and the floor decides whether freelancing actually pays you better than a salary. This article is the method rather than another price list: our freelance Salesforce rates in Europe hub already gives the market country by country.
Methodology. Day rates are medians of rates quoted in UK contract job adverts for the six months to 3 November 2026, from IT Jobs Watch, Salesforce contracts (1,163 vacancies, median 525 pounds, up 5.00 percent year on year) and its role pages for Salesforce Developer (178 vacancies, 575 pounds), Salesforce Architect (113 vacancies, 650 pounds), Senior Salesforce Developer (32 vacancies, 625 pounds), Salesforce Marketing Cloud (69 vacancies, 635 pounds) and Salesforce Consultant (29 vacancies, 450 pounds). Utilisation and DACH hourly rates come from the freelancermap Freelancer-Kompass 2026. Billable day assumptions and negotiation observations are Apiire's own, from European Salesforce freelance placements between November 2025 and October 2026: field observations, not a statistical sample.
The ceiling: what UK contract adverts actually quote in 2026
Before you calculate anything, anchor yourself in what buyers put in writing. The figures below are medians of quoted rates in contract adverts, so they describe what clients are willing to publish, not what the average freelancer banks over a year.
| Role or skill cited, UK contract adverts | Median day rate | Contract vacancies, 6 months | Year on year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforce, all contract roles | 525 pounds | 1,163 | up 5.0 percent |
| Salesforce Architect | 650 pounds | 113 | up 4.8 percent |
| Salesforce Marketing Cloud | 635 pounds | 69 | up 37.3 percent |
| Senior Salesforce Developer | 625 pounds | 32 | up 2.0 percent |
| Salesforce Developer, outside London | 625 pounds | part of the 178 | up 25.0 percent |
| Salesforce Developer, national | 575 pounds | 178 | up 15.0 percent |
| Salesforce Consultant | 450 pounds | 29 | down 10.0 percent |
| Salesforce, 25th percentile | 425 pounds | 1,163 | entry band |
| Salesforce, 90th percentile | 725 pounds | 1,163 | top band |
Two readings matter. First, the spread inside a single ecosystem is about 1.7 to 1 between the 25th and the 90th percentile, so two freelancers with the same number of years can be priced 300 pounds a day apart depending on what they are hired for. Second, the thin samples move violently: Marketing Cloud is up 37.3 percent on 69 adverts while the generic consultant line is down 10 percent on 29 adverts, which is a sample size effect as much as a market signal. Treat the all roles median of 525 pounds across 1,163 adverts as the reliable anchor, and the role lines as direction. The four inputs that set your floor
A day rate is not a salary divided by 220. Four inputs decide your floor, and three of them have nothing to do with the market.
- Your target gross income. Not your old net salary. The gross you need to pay yourself, before income tax and before the social contributions your employer used to cover without showing you the bill.
- Your realistic billable days. The single input that wrecks most pricing. Plan on 140 to 180, not 220, for the reasons in the next section.
- Your annual business costs. Accounting, insurance, software, hardware, training, certifications, travel, and the unbilled hours you spend selling.
- Your buffer for what an employer gave you for free. Pension, paid holiday, sick leave, notice period. Respondents to the Freelancer-Kompass 2026 set aside 1,167 euros a month for retirement alone, roughly 14,000 euros a year before a single day of holiday is funded.
How much should I charge as a Salesforce freelancer? The method on real numbers
Floor day rate equals target gross income plus annual costs plus buffer, divided by billable days. Run it at UK numbers and compare each result with the percentiles above.
| Target gross income | Annual business costs | Pension and gap buffer | Total to recover | Billable days assumed | Floor day rate | Where that sits in the market |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50,000 pounds | 6,000 pounds | 7,000 pounds | 63,000 pounds | 170 | 371 pounds | below the 25th percentile of 425 pounds |
| 70,000 pounds | 8,000 pounds | 10,000 pounds | 88,000 pounds | 170 | 518 pounds | at the median of 525 pounds |
| 90,000 pounds | 9,000 pounds | 12,000 pounds | 111,000 pounds | 170 | 653 pounds | at the 75th percentile of 650 pounds |
| 120,000 pounds | 10,000 pounds | 15,000 pounds | 145,000 pounds | 170 | 853 pounds | above the 90th percentile of 725 pounds |
| 70,000 pounds, thin year | 8,000 pounds | 10,000 pounds | 88,000 pounds | 140 | 629 pounds | between the 75th and 90th percentile |
| 70,000 pounds, full year | 8,000 pounds | 10,000 pounds | 88,000 pounds | 200 | 440 pounds | just above the 25th percentile |
Read the last two rows twice, because they are the whole article. The same person, with the same target and the same costs, needs 629 pounds a day in a year with 140 billable days and 440 pounds in a year with 200. That is a 43 percent swing driven by nothing but utilisation. The same arithmetic explains why the 120,000 pound target does not work at 170 days: 145,000 pounds divided by the 725 pound top band requires 200 billable days at a 90th percentile rate, which is a rare year rather than a plan.
Price your floor at your worst realistic utilisation, not your best. If you quote 440 pounds assuming 200 billable days and the year delivers 150, you have worked twelve months for about 66,000 pounds of revenue against an 88,000 pound requirement, and no mid contract increase will recover the difference.
Billable days: the input that breaks most pricing
The 2026 data is blunt about utilisation. In the Freelancer-Kompass 2026, 43 percent of freelancers report no secured project utilisation for the months ahead and 12 percent have work booked only for the next month. Average hourly rates across the DACH region fell for the first time since the survey began, from 104 to 103 euros, while respondents reported working 42 hours a week against a German full time average of 34.7 hours, and taking about 29 days off a year. More hours, slightly less money, less visibility.
Translate that into days. A UK year holds roughly 253 working days once bank holidays are removed. Subtract 29 days of holiday, a few days of illness, and the time you spend on proposals, screening calls, invoicing, accounting and keeping up with three Salesforce releases a year. What is left is 180 billable days in a good year, 160 in a normal one and 140 in the year a contract ends three months early. Price the normal one, and treat the good one as upside rather than as your assumption.
The costs you have to load into the day rate
- Social contributions and insurance. Country specific and the largest line almost everywhere: health cover, pension, and the professional liability insurance that European clients increasingly ask to see before signing.
- Accounting and legal. An accountant, year end filings, and one lawyer read of your first framework contract. The vehicle itself changes this line, as our comparison of umbrella company against limited company for UK Salesforce contractors shows.
- Tooling and environments. Developer orgs, a deployment or CI tool, a laptop every three years, a phone plan, and a desk somewhere that is not a kitchen table.
- Certification and training. Exam fees, retakes, and the unbilled days spent getting credible on Agentforce or Data 360 before any client will pay you for them.
- Acquisition. The least visible and often the biggest: proposals, calls, interviews and the empty week between two missions. It is a real cost even when it shows up as unpaid time rather than an invoice.
What your specialisation is worth on top
Specialisation is the only lever that moves your ceiling rather than your floor, and the 2026 numbers put a price on it. Marketing Cloud adverts quote a 635 pound median, up 37.3 percent year on year, while the generic Salesforce consultant line sits at 450 pounds and fell 10 percent. Architect work holds 650 pounds. A Salesforce developer outside London is quoted at 625 pounds against a 575 pound national median, which is the opposite of what most candidates assume about regional work. The DACH market prices the same way: the Freelancer-Kompass puts management and IT consulting at 121 euros an hour and SAP work at 113 euros, against an all sector average of 103 euros.
The practical rule is that the premium follows scarce delivery evidence, not scarce certifications. A freelancer who can walk through two Marketing Cloud journeys running in production, or one Data 360 ingestion that survived a go live, prices above the median in a way a credential alone never does. If you are still assembling that evidence, how to become a Salesforce freelancer covers the first contract sequence.
How to quote without leaving money on the table
- Never quote before scope. Ask for the duration, the start date, the inside or outside IR35 status in the UK, the remote split, and who signs off the work. A number given before those answers is a number you will defend for six months.
- Quote one figure, not a range. A range is read as its lower bound, every time. If you want flexibility, put it in the contract shape rather than in the rate.
- Price the shape, not just the day. A confirmed six month engagement at four days a week is reasonably worth 10 to 15 percent less per day than a three week emergency fix, because it buys the utilisation you would otherwise have to go and sell.
- Do not discount to fill a gap. With 43 percent of freelancers lacking secured utilisation, discounting is the reflex of the whole market in 2026. The rate you accept becomes the anchor your next client hears about, and it is far harder to raise a rate than to hold one.
- Revisit at renewal, never mid contract. Bring the market data, not your costs: a client will discuss the 525 pound median and will not discuss your pension contributions.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good day rate for a Salesforce freelancer in 2026?
In the UK, 525 pounds is the median quoted in contract adverts citing Salesforce for the six months to 3 November 2026, with the middle half of the market between 425 and 650 pounds. Good means above your own floor, so the same 525 pounds is comfortable at 180 billable days and loss making at 120.
How many billable days should I use in my calculation?
Use 160 for a normal year, 180 for a good one and 140 for a year where a contract ends early. Anything above 200 is a hypothesis rather than a plan: 43 percent of respondents to the Freelancer-Kompass 2026 have no secured utilisation for the months ahead and 12 percent are booked only for the next month.
Should I charge by the hour or by the day?
By the day for Salesforce work in Europe, because that is how clients budget and compare. Keep an hourly figure for short interventions, usually the day rate divided by seven rather than eight, with a half day minimum. Hourly billing on a long engagement invites arguments about the twenty minutes you spent in a stand up.
How much more can I charge as an architect or a Marketing Cloud specialist?
On 2026 UK advert medians, Architect sits at 650 pounds and Marketing Cloud at 635 pounds against 450 pounds for a generic Salesforce consultant, so roughly 40 percent more. The premium is paid for delivery evidence in that specialism, not for the certification that goes with it.
Is a day rate comparable to my old salary?
No, and this is the most expensive pricing mistake in the ecosystem. A 525 pound day rate at 160 billable days is 84,000 pounds of revenue, out of which come social contributions, pension, insurance, accounting, tooling, holiday and the gaps between contracts. Our comparison of Salesforce freelance against permanent in Europe runs that arithmetic in both directions.
